Bang Bang Burgers
Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bang Bang Burgers serves artisanal burgers created from the highest quality Black Angus beef on hand-crafted brioche-style buns made from scratch by a local bakery. The restaurant prides itself on using locally-sourced ingredients, including its house-made fresh toppings, unique sides and craft beer that are all available through counter service to its customers.
The first Bang Bang Burgers location opened in 2013, and was such a success that Joe Huang, Bang Bang’s founder, launched a second location in 2018. To attract and keep customers returning, menus are constantly evolving; new menu items are added, others are removed, menu prices change, and special and seasonal menu items often occur.
Unfortunately, frequent menu printings are inefficient and not economical. Huang was looking for a flexible and cost-effective solution to change his menus quickly – to modify offerings and prices instantly without having to go through the lengthy and costly process of designing and printing new menus.
The Spectrio Solution
Through a relationship with supplier Coca-Cola, Bang Bang Burgers was introduced to and selected Spectrio’s digital signage solution. Spectrio installed three digital menu boards at the restaurant’s first location, and then four digital menu boards at the second.
As a counter-service only restaurant, Bang Bang Burgers uses Spectrio’s digital menu boards to showcase its entire selection of mouthwatering burger and sandwich options, as well as sides, the kids menu and beverage selections. The digital menu boards also showcase the restaurant’s partnerships, featuring scrolling logos of Bang Bang’s local suppliers to reinforce their locally-sourced messaging.
Huang says he now makes menu changes digitally through just a few keyboard strokes, and can completely update the restaurant’s offerings on the digital menu boards, website and POS within an hour. Before, a menu change would involve a graphic designer, long turnaround times, high printing costs and could even include the occasional typo.
According to Joe, Spectrio’s Digital Menu Boards have made a huge difference in his operations and sales. “Spectrio’s Digital Menu Boards allow me to quickly adjust the menu based on ingredients available or seasonal specials we’re running…because I can make [that] change instantly, instead of going through the process of designing and printing a menu, that’s money right there.”
Whole Foods Market
Founded in 1980 as one small store in Austin, Texas, Whole Foods Market® is now the world’s leading retailer of natural and organic foods. Paramount to the Whole Foods Market corporate philosophy is their commitment to customer satisfaction. They aim to turn customers into advocates of Whole Foods Market. They are committed to dealing with customers efficiently, knowledgeably and with flair. Whole Foods Market – Fresh Pond, like every Whole Foods Market location, operates its own independent call center to handle the large volume of calls the store receives. These calls are used by customers of the branch with sales or customer service questions that are critical to the branch’s ability to provide said customers with quality customer service.
Customers who drop a call because of dissatisfaction with a long hold time directly impact the fiscal well-being of this Whole Foods Market branch because they were not given exemplary service, and thus are not likely to become advocates of Whole Foods Market. Conversely, if a hold time is not too long and is presented in an enjoyable style, this affords the branch an opportunity to promote store events to a captive audience. Prior to becoming clients of Spectrio, Whole Foods Market – Fresh Pond used Muzak for their OnHold™ Messaging. They discovered limitations with the Muzak system:
- All stores throughout the Midwest region had to use the same message
- They were limited to one message change per quarter (four per year)
- The update process necessitated each store being mailed a tape to manually install into their system.
This Muzak system cost $300 for installation and $75/month.
The Spectrio Solution
A six month trial of the Spectrio On-Hold Messaging system was able to offer quantifiably improved customer service over Muzak in several ways:
- Messages used information about events and promotions specific to their location.
- Updates to the messages as frequently as the store desired. Modular approach allows time-sensitive material to expire on a pre- determined date, without changing the general tone or content of the main message.
- After the initial installation of the messaging device into the phone system, all message updates are made by remote upload.
Over the course of their six month trial period, Whole Foods Market – Fresh Pond received positive feedback from both customers and regional leadership. Dave Lannon, President of Whole Foods Market Northeast Region, was initially a “big opponent” of the idea but now “really loves” the SPECTRIO system, and even instructed other corporate leadership to “call into Fresh Pond and get put on hold.” Lannon said he wants to “go wide” with the SPECTRIO system, and roll it out to their other locations. SPECTRIO currently services over 65 locations and counting!

Brixx Wood Fired Pizza
Brixx Wood Fired Pizza was opening a new franchise location in Franklin, Tennessee and the owners needed a simple, turn-key way to add a fun atmosphere to the restaurant. Because Franklin is located just outside of Nashville, music was a big part of the owners’ lives and they wanted to bring a personal touch to their franchise.
The Spectrio Solution
Spectrio worked with the owners during the new store construction to install an overhead music system that worked for their space. As with any new construction, there were many parties involved and delays occurred, but Spectrio technical support worked diligently with the general contractor and the system installers to meet deadlines and ensure the system was up and running.
Once the sound system and overhead speakers were installed, the owners had very specific ideas for the style of music they wanted to play, and Spectrio was able to assist with music selection and day-parting to quickly respond to the owners’ requests. Although Spectrio’s playlists are continually updating to provide a diverse music experience for guests, they are able to be edited at a moment’s notice to meet the owners’ needs, which proved useful during the 2011 holiday season.
To complete their marketing package, Spectrio also produced a custom on-hold message for the store, to entertain and inform callers. The on-hold message coordinates with the overhead music, allowing the owners to share current specials, answer frequently asked questions, and promote their fundraiser program.
The owners of the Franklin Brixx Wood Fired Pizza were extremely pleased with the level of service provided by the Spectrio team, from the sale through design and installation, through customer service and the production process.
